3 plus 1 equals 4

By Amy @ http://www.and1moremeansfour.blogspot.com/

As i sat at work after announcing my 4th pregnancy in 4years absorbing the ashtonished looks on the faces of my colleauges i didn't really panic about the forthcoming arrival that would be making its way in the new year. I mearly shrugged off the comments of ' you must be mad' or'don't you have a t.v?' to answer that question yes i do have a t.v but it is mainly tuned into cbeebies or playhouse disney which is not the best stimulating viewing for any adult. It never really occurred to me that my family was about to grow by 1more.For 9months my lump grew again like it already knew what was going on, poor body it must think that its duty in life is to be pregnant all the time, and slowly but surely baby grew and moved more and it never really occurred to me that baby was ever going to be here. Being pregnant is all i've known for 4years and it was not being pregnant that felt strange. The weeks zoomed by and finaly after getting to 40weeks i realised that anytime now i would be adding another bundle to my family. But still my sleep deprived, i'm a mum of 3 under 3 brain was not computing that i was having another baby, 41weeks came and here baby number 4 was born after a long labour and a bit of a fright due to tiredness from both of us.Babies are so wonderful when first born so warm, so smooth, smelling so strange yet so wonderful, a scent that fills your senses with love and warmth and makes you feel so satisfyed that all the pain and discomfort had produced such a wonderful thing. Lying there as baby was being checked over produced a huge flashback of my other births, my mind swimming in wonderful memories of first glances and first holds and first feeds, spending hours gazing at my new arrival taking in every detail of their face, how perfect and tiny each finger and toe is and how amazing that that little person has been living in my tummy all this time.Fast forward to 3am day one and my eyes open to the sound of crying and then my body registers that i feel like i've been run over by a steam roller and spent yesterday riding a hard seated bike. My shoulders ache, my back feels like rubber, my head is banging and dont even mention my private parts and i look over and see this beautiful little one yelling at me for food it finaly hit me, i'm a mum of 4 under 4.......now what ?!

Sweet Deams Just a Dream?

By Jacqui Munro @ http://madewithlovenaturally.co.uk/
A sleepless, restless baby means sleepless, restless nights for parents. Parenting is tough enough and this is just another hurdle that we have to face. A baby who has poor sleeping patterns can cause as much frustration for little ones as for parents. An ongoing problem can even cause relationship and bonding difficulties. Before six weeks old, our little girl was sleeping through. At ten months old, she began waking three to six times a night, consistently. Sleep deprivation is used as a method of torture for a reason. While none of us would ever liken our labours of love to torture, sleep deprivation, even in its mildest form, and disrupted sleep is a concrete reality for many parents. Not only does it effect us psychologically and physically, it also takes its toll on our little ones. Rest assured, there is help, one just needs to know where to find it.Below is a checklist that parents need to work through in order to understand why baby is not sleeping or waking during the night:Is your baby well?
Poorly babies have difficulty sleeping. They may be hurting, uncomfortable, feverish, experiencing difficulty in breathing due to stuffy noses or teething as was the case with our little one’s bout of insomnia. Is your baby well fed and are her nutritional needs being met?
Perhaps your little one has fed badly during the day or is not feeling full for long enough after meals. Rule out hunger as a reason for night waking. Is your baby comfortable?
Scratchy bed linen, a clothing label in the back of the neck, a dirty nappy, being too hot or too cold and having a room too dark or too light can prevent baby from falling asleep. Does your baby have a good day sleep routine?
Over tired babies just will not sleep well at night. Too much activity and over-excitement during the day can also keep babies awake at night. Are you spending good quality time with your baby during the day?
Babies and toddlers who don’t spend enough time with parents, especially mum, during the day, may be suffering from separation anxiety and simply be too scared to fall asleep for fear of being away from you. Secure babies are easier to settle and get to sleep.Has your baby developed an attachment to a security object?
A blanky, dummy or special stuffed toy to self soothe baby in the middle of the night. All babies need this. Finally, does your baby have a fixed bed time routine?
Babies are more relaxed when they know what’s coming next. Bedtime routines are as personal and customisable as any other routine in any household. They need to be established based on what is best suited to you and yours. Whatever your unique routine may be, it is crucial to stick to it, even when not at home, keeping to baby’s routine will help her settle easier in unfamiliar surroundings. If all the possible causes of baby not sleeping have been ruled out, not all hope is lost. There are a number of natural sleep-inducing tactics that you can take advantage of. Bath-time is a fun time for baby and parents. Often a time for baby to release some pent up energy by splashing and playing in the tub. The warm water soothes little ones and makes them feel safe, associating bath-time with being in the womb. It helps to use an all-natural soap or body wash that contains calming ingredients, such as lavender and chamomile. You can also add a few drops of lavender and/or chamomile essential oil to baby’s bath water. A drop or two will do as baby’s skin can be sensitive. An after bath massage with baby massage oil or lotion with lavender and chamomile can work wonders to settle an excited baby. Also a great mommy-and-me time to reinforce that special bond.Jammies are also important. The clothes that baby gets put to bed in can also determine how baby sleeps. Baby’s sleepwear should be soft on her delicate skin, freshly laundered and free from anything that could make her feel uncomfortable. Nightclothes should also be loose-fitting, but not too loose to avoid getting tangled in them, breathable and not be too hot or too cold. Organic cotton and bamboo fabrics make for preferred baby sleeping gear. As with baby’s pajamas, bed linen should also be soft, fresh and comfortable. Some parents enjoy reading baby a bedtime story or playing soft music while baby drifts off. These however can establish habits that baby becomes dependent on to fall asleep. It may help to have a humidifier in the room so that the air stays moist and fresh. If your little one has a stuffy nose adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the humidifier water. Adding lavender or chamomile essential oil to a humidifier or oil burner can also help to ease your little one into restful sleep. It is important that babies and toddlers feel secure at bedtime. Give them a cuddle before putting them down. Bedtime bottles or breast-feeding also help little ones feel content. Try making up baby’s formula with some chamomile or Rooibos (Red Bush) tea instead of just water. This is particularly helpful for colicky babies, it helps to settle them and soothe sore tummies. Giving baby a dummy together with a security object or either alone from very early on, not only teaches little ones the art of self-soothing, but they also relate sleepy time to these things. Evidence from several studies demonstrate that babies who learn to self-soothe early on in life, become better psychologically equipped to manage stress in adulthood.Ensure that the room is dark, this also helps babies to distinguish the difference between day and night. If your baby wakes during the night, don’t leave her for longer than five minutes. She may just be missing you or having bad dreams. It is important that your baby knows that you are there. As difficult as it may be try not picking you baby up at first. A gentle back rub or hair stroking may be enough to settle her back to sleep. If you do pick her up, be sure to stay in the dark room and try not to talk to her. Lying with her may also help. Your baby will soon slip into a routine that allows the whole family to get a good night’s sleep.Sweet dreams!Live. Love. Naturally.@JacquiMunro

Kiss My Stretch Marks

We'll meet at the pool, they said. They were twenty-something mums. I was a forty-something mum. One of the bonuses of having a bonus baby (the baby you have when your other kids can tie their own shoe-laces and run their own baths) is that not only do doctors and policemen look younger but so do all the other mums specially in their bathers!By the time I was the mother of a bonus baby, my older kids weren't any help to my fragile body image blue goes with everything, said one of them. It was my varicose veins he was referring too. I began to wonder, if trim and taut are terrific, where does that leave soft, round and droopy (or drippy)? The messages on news-stands are loud and clear: yummy mummies look gorgeous and slim as soon as possible after giving birth and those who don't are likely to have their wobbly bits blown up on cover shots think Reese, Britney and Catherine, who incidentally was lauded just a few years ago for putting herself in the hands (or was that, on the treadmill?) of a personal trainer, just hours after her first baby was born so she would fit into her slinky wedding dress.Any big life change is a crisis point and isn't having a baby one of the biggest changes of all? Crisis points undermine our confidence so that we can feel especially vulnerable when people make comments about our bodies. And, from the moment a pregnancy becomes visible, you can be certain people will take the liberty of making comments such as my you are getting big! Or suggesting I bet you will be glad to get your figure back,(when really, your greatest concern is more likely to be, how will I get this baby out of my body?). Body image and self-esteem are so strongly connected that beauty issues become confused with self-esteem. Instead of being able to say, I feel unhappy, you say, I am fat and when you allow comments and unreal expectations to chip away at your self-esteem, it becomes all too easy to believe that how you look is who you are: that fat signifies an inability to take control of your life while a lean, toned body is a triumph of order over nature's raw energy. Struggling to maintain an ideal body shape can be less about health or appearance and more about trying to feel in control. Soon you move away from being aware of your body and bodily feelings and your body becomes an object to be punished or rewarded (if you are a good little body I will buy you new clothes).Although you may be feeling extra vulnerable and keen to lose your mummy tummy, it isn't wise to obsessively restrict weight gain during pregnancy or too soon after birth. A pregnant body is governed by factors beyond the control of diet and exercise: your body shape and size are to a large extent genetically determined, and your partner's genes also come into the equation (if you have a tall partner and you are a small woman you could well carry a big baby). Extra weight gained during pregnancy is part of your baby's life support after birth too. It is better to think of your body in terms of repair, rather than depriving yourself of nutrients. It took nine months for these changes to take place and it will probably take at least as long for your body to regain its former shape (give or take, a few wobbly bits).Meanwhile, be kind to yourself. If your body image needs a boost, hire the video Shirley Valentine' and enjoy a laugh as the star's Greek lover points out how her stretch marks are badges of honour. As American author (and succulent wild woman) Sark advises, lets look closer at the size of our hearts, the width of our souls and the length of our spirits.

Celebrity Baby Names

Celebrities are not like everyday people. They have busy schedules, driveexpensive cars, and wear jewelry that others can only dream of owning. Maybe itis because celebrities are so far removed from normal life that they often givetheir babies unusual names.
Some names are just a little different. John Travolta and Kelly Preston havetwo beautiful children. Their daughter's name is Ella Bleu. Their son's name isJett. Jett is different, but anyone who knows anything about John Travolta knowshe has a love for flying. Gwyneth Paltrow, pregnant again, came under scrutinyfor naming her first child Apple. While it is unusual, it is somewhat cute, likein the "apple of their eye." Chris Martin, her husband, tired of the controversyover the name Apple, has jokingly stated their second child, whether male orfemale, will be named Banana. Another cute name is Dandelion, the name of KeithRichards' daughter. Julie Roberts recently gave birth to twins - a boy and agirl - and received flack over the names she chose. She received almost as muchgrief over the choice for her daughter's name, Hazel, as she did the moreeccentric choice of Phinnaeus for her son.
Many people speculated what Madonna would name her first child. Lourdes Mariaseems a fitting name for child who's mother's name is Madonna, but she oftengoes by Lola. Her son is named Rocco, which sounds a bit like a cartooncharacter, but at least it is a tough sounding name. Actor Casey Affleck andfiancé Summer Phoenix recently had a son namedIndiana August, which leads one to wonder what state and month their son wasconceived in. Toni Braxton has two sons, Denim and Diezel. While both usefulproducts, they make somewhat strange names for children. Rob Marrow decided itwould be cute if he named his daughter Tu Simone Ayer, calling her Tu Morrow.Wonder if she will think it is cute 20 years from now? Actor Jason Lee named hisson Pilot Inspektor, but magician Penn Jillette may have topped them all. Henamed his daughter, Moxie Crimefighter, saying "because when she's pulled overfor speeding she can say, `But officer, we're on the same side, my middle nameis CrimeFighter."'
If you think it is a new trend, think again. Back in 1971, David Bowie andhis then wife Angela decided to name their son Duncan Zowie Heywood Jones. Hesoon became known as Zowie Bowie. Cher named her children Chastity Sun andElijah Blue.
The Phoenix family is well known for their unusual choice of baby names.Summer Phoenix's siblings are the late actor River Phoenix, actresses Rain andLiberty Phoenix and actor Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin felt his name was so out ofplace with his siblings, that when he was four, he decided to change his name toLeaf. By the early 1990's, he had reverted back to using his birth name. Anotherfamily infamous for their choices of baby names is the Zappa family. Frank'schildren are Dweezil, Moon Unit, Ahmed Emuukha Rodan and Diva Muffin. While manypeople think that Dweezil is his given name, his birth name was originally IanDonald Calvin Euclid Zappa because the hospital refused to register the nameDweezil. Always called Dweezil, when he was a child, he wanted to make the nameofficial and his parents took him to have it changed legally. Paula Yates, former wife of Sir Bob Geldof and girlfriend of late rocker Michael Hutchence, also had a knack for giving her children unusual names. Among her brood are FifiTrixibelle, Peaches Honeyblossom Michelle Charlotte Angel Vanessa, HeavenlyHiraani Tigerlily, and Little Pixie.
Some celebrity baby names make sense if you know the story behind them.Eurythmic's Dave Stewart named his son Django after jazz guitarist DjangoReinhardt. Stevie Wonder named his son Mandla Kadjaly Carl Stevland, howeverMandla means "powerful" in Zulu and Kadjaly means "born from God" in Swahili.Helen Hunt just gave birth to a baby girl she named Makena'lei Gordon. The nameMakena'lei is from a friend's dream and means "many flowers of heaven." Gordon,an unlikely girl's name, was to honor of Helen's father, television directorGordon Hunt. Nicolas Cage just named his new baby boy Kal-el. Because Nicolastook his stage name of Cage from comic book character Luke Cage, he decided toname his son Kal-el after one of his favorite comic book heroes. Kal-el isSuperman's kryptonian name.
So, do the children like these unconventional names given them by theirparents? In some cases, they do. The Phoenix's seem to love theirnature-inspired names and the Zappa children seem to have had no ill effectsfrom their eccentric names. However, some children tire of the peculiar namesquickly. Zowie Bowie had had enough of his moniker by the time he was 12 andasked to be referred to as "Joey." Although Dandelion Richards does not seem toobad, she has since started referring to herself as Angela. Recently, PeachesHoneyblossom Michelle Charlotte Angel Vanessa Geldof has been the most outspokenabout the odd choice her parents made in naming her. She has been quoted assaying, "I hate ridiculous names. My weird name has haunted me all my life."
While having an unusual name might be difficult for any child, the celebrityof a child's parents may enhance it even further. Thankfully, celebrity childrenwho decide they don't like their given names can switch to a nickname or eveneventually have their names legally changed.

If You're A Parent Then Parent Well

One of my biggest frustrations in life is seeing parents who do not know how to parent. I believe strongly that being a parent is one of life's greatest privileges. However, with this great privilege, like all other privileges, comes great responsibility. One of our greatest contributions to our society and to the generations that come behind us happens in the way that we parent are children. What could be more important than learning how to parent and doing it well?
You've all been there and seen it. A bowling alley late at night. Beside your lane are parents that look like kids themselves. They are enjoying beer and way too many cigarettes. You would never guess they were parents unless you saw their young children wandering around them in between frames. You know without looking at your watch that it is way too late for children that young to still be awake let alone out in public. You can't help but wonder as their parents get drunk while ignoring them what kind of life the children lead and what kind of parents they truly are.
My desire to inform people about the realities of parentingg began as a scene much like the one I just described happened as I bowled with friends one night. I went home to where my children were safely in bed after having been tucked into bed with their favorite story by their father and I just had to wonder what the lives of those neglected children would be like in twenty years compared to the lives of my own children twenty years down the road. I couldn't help but think of the great role that a parent plays in the growth and development of their children.
If you are a parent, then please, please learn how to be a good parent. Take classes, read books, or get counseling. Do whatever is necessary for you to become the kind of parent that your children so desperately need in order to grow up as healthy, smart and successful people. The future of your children and even their children depend on the kind of parent you will be. Realize that raising children is one of the best privileges you could have in life. Take that privilege seriously and give your children the time, attention, and love that they need. The day you become a parent is the day that life stops being all about you. So please, if you are a parent or ever plan to be one, act like it. The whole world will be glad you did.
